Edison had put some of his lamps along two wires strung between trees on the road leading from the railway station to his laboratory. Then he pulled the switch and the electric lamps suddenly glowed like golden flowers, illuminating the road. It is hard for us to imagine how exciting this was to people who had never seen an electric light before.
